Toshiba are pioneers in Cobalt (Co)-based amorphous (non-crystalline) magnetic cores for noise suppression, mag-amps and pulse transformers. Toshiba’s research and development team are committed to improving the properties of the amorphous alloys and the magnetic components made from these materials. Their goals are to reduce energy consumption and minimise electronic circuit noise with a clear focus of anticipating future applications.

Noise suppression

Toshiba’s amorphous noise suppression devices, AMOBEADS® and SPIKE KILLER®, suppress rapid changes in current which could otherwise lead to electrical noise in many circuits. Unlike other noise reduction methods, which absorb noise after it is created, amorphous noise suppression devices suppress the source of the noise. Because of their square-shaped magnetic hysteresis behaviour, amorphous noise suppression devices have a very large inductance when the current crosses zero (ie changes sign). This large inductance effectively blocks any further current changes. During normal current flow amorphous noise suppression devices have very low inductance. The reverse recovery phenomenon in a semiconductor switching devices occurs when the current switches off. This phenomenon can lead to noise in the circuit. Amorphous noise suppression devices effectively and efficiently decrease the noise caused by the reverse recovery current.

AMOBEADS are structurally optimised for use with single-turn windings. They are intended for applications where they are simply slipped over the leads of the components to be quieted.

SPIKE KILLER are named for their effective suppression of current spikes in switching circuits. "SPIKE KILLER" are small saturable cores which are usually wire wound. "SPIKE KILLER" provide excellent noise suppression and protection of semiconductors.

Saturable cores

The "MS" series of amorphous saturable cores provides the stable magnetic performance required by Mag-Amp at an excellent price. This makes the "MS" series an ideal choice for designers of PC power supplies.

Low-loss saturable cores

The new "MT" series of saturable cores, with 30% lower core loss than our "MS" series are well suited for use in power supplies with higher switching frequency (greater than or equal to 250 kHz). When "MT" series cores are used as Magnetic Amplifiers (Mag-Amps) in power supplies, they provide higher efficiency at no load and need lower reset current than the same sized "MS" core.

High-permeability cores

The "FS" Series of Amorphous cores have permeabilities of about 100,000 at 10 kHz and retain their high permeability over a wide range of frequencies. They provide lower core loss than corresponding ferrite cores. The "FS" series cores are useful for Pulse Transformers, Input Chokes, and Common Mode Filters, among other applications.
